Man Bijt Hond Visits Gommaire Verbruggen Again After 15 Years

Man Bijt Hond Visits Gommaire Verbruggen: A Story of Passion and Perseverance

In 2010, Gommaire Verbruggen from Scherpenheuvel received a film crew from the renowned program "Man Bijt Hond" at his door. Gommaire is a passionate pigeon fancier, but he suffers from pigeon fancier's lung, a serious lung condition. Due to his health, Gommaire was advised by a specialist to get rid of his pigeons. However, he couldn't imagine giving up his beloved pigeons; for him, the return of his pigeons was more beautiful than watching a football or cycling race.

Innovative Solution

To protect his health and maintain his passion, Gommaire uses a special helmet that provides him with clean air. Thanks to this helmet, his contact with pigeon dust is significantly reduced, allowing him to continue his hobby without jeopardizing his health.

 Reflection after 15 Years

Fifteen years later, "Man Bijt Hond" paid another visit to Gommaire, this time at the foot of the basilica in Scherpenheuvel where Gommaire still resides. The helmet, now more than twenty years old, still works excellently, and Gommaire continues to race pigeons. Initially, Gommaire had to be constantly reminded to wear his helmet, as pigeon dust made him very ill. However, wearing the helmet has now become a habit.

Gommaire is very satisfied with his helmet and the ability to continue his pigeon sport. He enthusiastically shares his satisfaction: "That helmet is very good!"

 What is Pigeon Fancier's Lung?

Pigeon fancier's lung, also known as extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA) or hypersensitivity pneumonitis, is a chronic lung disease caused by an allergic reaction to certain substances, such as proteins in pigeon droppings and feathers.
