Marten wreaks havoc in Victor Valvekens' breeding loft

In recent years, complaints from pigeon fanciers about birds of prey and martens have become increasingly common. For some, the problem is so severe that they are considering abandoning pigeon racing and giving up their passion. Stories about the impact of predators frequently circulate in pigeon clubs: valuable pigeons are taken, and breeding successful birds is becoming increasingly difficult. It’s enough to discourage even the most dedicated enthusiasts.

Last Saturday evening, as usual, fanciers gathered at the club to strike their clocks and calculate the results. However, that evening brought sad news: Victor Valvekens had been visited by an unwelcome guest at his pigeon loft. A marten had attacked his breeding loft, killing all the breeding pigeons present. One pigeon was even taken away by the predator.

Over the past few years, Victor Valvekens has had to downsize his pigeon stock due to health issues. Nevertheless, he has remained an avid fancier and continues to excel in pigeon racing, particularly in speed races, which are his passion. Despite his small number of pigeons, he consistently achieves impressive results. This weekend was no exception: his pigeons performed well, maintaining a high prize percentage, as has been the case throughout the season.

The loss of his breeding pigeons is a significant blow for Victor. His pigeons are his passion, and the results he achieves are a source of pride. The void left by the marten’s attack on his breeding loft highlights yet again the immense challenges faced by pigeon fanciers today.

It is becoming increasingly clear that pigeon fanciers must design their lofts in such a way that visits from martens and other animals are impossible. Even the smallest gap or opening is enough for these predators to strike at the lofts. Martens cause damage not only in pigeon lofts but also in attics, cars, and other places. As mentioned earlier in the article, these animals are truly a plague.

While certain groups are proud of the reintroduction of these animals into various regions, the devastation they cause often remains out of their view. The suffering inflicted is felt all too well by pigeon fanciers. We hope that fanciers will not be discouraged by these challenges, but it is clear that urgent measures are needed to effectively address the plagues of birds of prey, martens, rats, and other unwelcome visitors.
