Start of the Half-Fond Season: Successful Opening Flight to Melun

The first weekend of May traditionally marks the start of the half-fond season for old pigeons. After several weeks of intense activity on the small and large speed races, last week saw an impressive entry of over **900 old pigeons**. For the opening flight to **Melun**, expectations in Scherpenheuvel were around **300 pigeons**, but the actual turnout pleasantly surprised many.

In total, 468 old pigeons were entered by 22 fanciers, exceeding initial expectations. Although some fanciers remain somewhat hesitant due to the **two nights in the basket**, the start of the half-fond season looks promising. Last year, participation in these races was significantly lower, but this positive beginning sparks hope for a successful series of competitions.

Additionally, the guaranteed stakes for the half-fond races in Scherpenheuvel are proving to be popular. 21 pigeons were placed in the mies up to €5, while 50 pigeons in the mies were entered up to €2.50. In the poules, 15 pigeons were entered up to €1.00. This highlights the enthusiasm and competitive spirit of the participants.

Next weekend, the Brabantse-Unie will head to Vierzon with the old pigeons. The big question remains: how many fanciers will be eager to take part in this challenge? The racing season is moving quickly, and the first national flight of 2025, Bourges I for old pigeons, is already on the schedule.
